Most rules only make sense after you break them. Rules are not bad, but they are approximations. They're someone else's experience averaged out, written down so you don't have to think too hard.

Rules exist because someone had the thought before you, and if you never test them, you never really get to know where the edge actually is. So here's something I noticed about myself. I test limits.

I've-- I, I always have, whether that's rules, training, diet, work, relationships, or seeing how far you can lean a motorcycle before it loses grip. For a long time, I didn't know why I did this.

I thought it was impatience or arrogance or just being bad with authority. And while there's truth to the latter, it's not just that. I was actually trying to find the edge before things break,

uh, so I could live just inside of it. Because once you know where the damage begins, then you can be incredibly precise.

And I didn't realize that this was a thing I did automatically until it clicked in the most random way, which was tanning.

And this particular week's random knowledge rabbit hole was finding the most efficient way to tan relative to skin aging and DNA damage.

So I'm not gonna bore you with the details about UVA, UVB, the time of day, reflective surfaces, angles, et cetera. The point is, before you can optimize anything, you need to understand the constraints.

I will give you the answer I came up with in a little while because it'll only make sense after what comes next.

What's important here is that I realized the actual rule at play, and that rule is growth happens best right below the damage threshold. Everything in life has a point where stress stops helping and starts hurting.

The problem is not that people don't work hard enough. I think the problem is that most people don't know where the line is, so they, they live on the wrong side of it.

And if you're below it, it feels comfortable but dull, and you might be bored. That's when you tend to overthink, and you tell yourself you're being patient or strategic, but really nothing is moving.

So you stay there for years, and you stay safe and, and quietly, most likely miserable. If you're above that line, the signal is more obvious because you burn, right? On your skin, it's a sunburn.

At the gym, it's an injury. At work, it's burnout. In life, it's doing something stupid at two AM and wondering why [chuckles] you ended up having to get bailed out from the Broward County Jail.

So these are all different domains, but it's the same underlying mechanism. The sweet spot, and the only place where things dramatically improve, is right under that breaking point.

That's where effort turns into adaptation instead of consequences. But you can't operate there by guessing only, and you can't copy someone else's rules. You have to find the line first.

There is another half of the equation that I have to mention. There's one more piece that makes this work, and without it, the, the whole thing falls apart. So finding the threshold is only half of the equation.

The other one is what you do after you touch it, because adaptation doesn't happen while you're pushing. If you look at the, the skin, the skin doesn't adapt while it's being stressed by the sun.

Your muscles don't grow while you're lifting. It happens after. And the brain doesn't rewire while you are forcing input.

All of that happens after, when the system has space to reorganize, and this is where biology and neuroscience agree. Stress sends the signal, and rest does the work.

That's why pushing nonstop doesn't make you go faster. It just makes you inflamed or tired or stuck.

And this is also why when you space things out, it feels slower in the moment, but ultimately it compounds much faster over time.

And once I saw this, a lot of things I was already doing suddenly made sense, and this is including why the tanning rabbit hole felt so familiar when I started to research it, and this is also why it connected immediately to chapter five, How to Think Less and Learn Faster of Unfuck Your Thinking.

I had already been using the same mechanism. I just didn't have a name for it yet. So I guess we can name it together, and we are calling this the universal law of maximum efficiency.

Every system has two reactions to stress. Um, one part gets stronger from it, and the other part gets worn down by it. So if you have too little stress, then nothing changes.

If you have too much stress, things start to fall apart. And somewhere in the middle, you have this little spot where growth is fast and damage is manageable. That is the only place where progress actually compounds.

I made a graph of this, um, which is available on my, on my website, but I'm gonna try and describe it to you. So it's a simple X and Y axis, and the X-axis is stress and intensity, so how hard you push.

The Y-axis is the net adaptive return, so this is going to be the benefit minus the cost.Then you have a, uh, straight line that goes from zero at a forty-five-degree angle straight, straight up.

This is your adaptive signal, which means the pressure to change. So it increases as the stress and in-intensity increases. And finally, you have a blue curved line.

So that line starts off underneath the black one and progressively gets closer to it until a point where it exceeds it and then goes back down, uh, dramatically. This is the damage cost.

If I were to put this in simpler terms, the straight line is the signal to adapt, which means that the harder you push, the louder the message to change is.

The curved line that I talked about is how much stress is wearing the system down in that specific moment. And there's a little shaded area where the blue line is above the black one.

This is where signal helps more than, than it hurts, and this is your zone of maximum efficiency. Think of it like a stove.

If it's too low, nothing cooks, and if the stove is too high, then it, it burns the items from the stove. And there's a narrow range where the, the food cooks fast but without burning. So why does this matter?

If you want to move faster in anything without burning or getting bored, look at it like this. Short periods of high intensity followed by breaks, and then you repeat that consistently.

This is universal in my opinion because any system that adapts, whether that be cells, brains, or identities, they follow the same efficiency curve.

Biology, cognition, behavior, these are different systems, but they follow the same curve. And you have the same pattern, the same failure modes, and also the same sweet spot.

And the sweet spot is the maximum efficiency zone, which is exactly why after digging through the UVA, U-- uh, UVB ratios on my research for, for tanning, um, the DNA repair windows and reflection physics, the, the most efficient tanning protocol I could find turned out to be almost disappointingly simple and perfectly aligned with the law that we just named.

Between nine and ten forty AM, ten-minute exposures and then off for twenty, ideally near a reflective surface like water, uh, because lower angle plus bounce gives you a more usable signal, which is in this case the melanin production without cranking total damage of sun exposure.

And so once I saw this pattern everywhere, a lot of things that I already do suddenly made a lot of sense to me. And I guess that now I do them deliberately. So I-I'll give you a few examples. Writing or working.

I don't grind all day. I do forty to forty-five-minute blocks, um, of total lock-in where I don't have notifications. I don't m-multitask. I just put binaural beats in my ears, and then I stop completely.

So I leave the room, I walk, I do something completely unrelated to work. And during that time, the ideas reorganize themselves during the break. Another example of that is the way I-- that I train.

So I don't do ninety-minute workouts. I do eight to twelve-minute sessions of hyper-controlled near failure body weight work. And when I can, I do it three to four times a day, so it's spaced out.

And so it's an intense push, and then I do a full recovery, and then I repeat. This way I get the maximum gain without the inflammation. And you can run the same experiment in your life.

Here are a few places I think that the law shows up in a powerful way. An example would be learning a skill.

So if you dive in for forty-five to sixty minutes on a deliberate practice with full focus, pushing edges, and then you step away for fifteen, thirty minutes.

Your brain consolidates during the break, and the skills stick faster than endless grinding. This is exactly what was described in, in chapter five. Another good example is, uh, creative projects,

and, um, I use that for writing as well. So ninety minutes, more or less, of deep dives on writing, art, code, whatever you wanna do, followed by a break. Now what's great about that,

and something I've noticed in my writing, is that the subconscious does the heavy lifting during the off time. And so I'll write something,

um, I'll have a few ideas that I jot down, maybe I write some paragraphs, and when I take a break, it-- I, I do something else, but my subconscious brain is still working through the ideas.

And usually when I come back to it, I have these moments where, oh, I know where this is gonna go next. And I see this happen over and over again. The... A lot of the breakthroughs on the ideas happen

after I stop forcing it. So now that you understand this, hopefully you can apply it to any area that you care about right now. Remember, the idea is not how long or how hard anymore.

It is how much signal does the system need and how much space does it need after? I believe that this is the blueprint that I keep following that works wonders for me, and I hope that it will for you too.
